Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Utility Lines Technician I to join our team at the City of Salem, VA. This is a full-time position that requires the installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines and appurtenances.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a variety of tasks in installing, maintaining, and repairing water and sewer lines, including making taps, installing and repairing service lines and laterals, and maintaining meters.
  • Transport crew, materials, and equipment, and drive trucks to and from maintenance and construction sites.
  • Repair waterline breaks by cutting pavement, removing materials, repairing pipe, filling hole with backfill materials, and tamping or rolling fill material.
  • Assist with repair of sanitary sewer system backups and overflows, including CCTV and flushing of sewer lines.
  • Spot for and direct drivers, set up work zones and flags traffic, put out signs, close lanes, set up lane shifts, and close roads as directed.
  • Install and maintain informational, regulatory, and construction signs.
  • Construct, repair, and maintain manholes.
  • Repair landscaping after installation, maintenance, or repair activities.
  • Assist with a variety of after-hours emergency problems, stand-by, and trouble calls.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Some knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance, and repair of utility lines.
  • Ability to operate construction equipment and perform manual and semiskilled labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
