Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Automotive Mechanic to join our team at the City of Salem, VA. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for performing routine and preventive maintenance and repair on a variety of vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance and repair on vehicles and equipment, including tune-ups, checking lights, tires, brake linings, wiper blades, horns, suspensions, etc.
  • Operate complex diagnostic testing equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical problems, determine required repair or replacement of parts, and initiate repair.
  • Fabricate replacement parts and metal for repairs to vehicles and equipment.
  • Perform hydraulic maintenance, diagnostics, and repair, including building and fixing hydraulic hoses.
  • Replace or disassemble and rebuild engines, making necessary repairs and adjustments, and replacing worn or defective parts.
  • Perform diversified electrical work on automotive equipment, including diagnosing electrical shorts, installing batteries and terminals, repairing and adjusting lights, and repairing generators, alternators, and starters.
  • Change, repair, and replace tires, mount and balance car and large truck tires, replace and check brakes, and perform exhaust work.
  • Perform road service calls on vehicles and equipment, performing minor repairs on site if possible, and towing and recovering vehicles and equipment using rollback and wrecker.
  • Maintain shop area in a clean and orderly state, opening and securing shop, tools, and equipment.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies for work orders, ordering and picking up supplies.
  • Perform street maintenance duties as assigned, including cutting trees, repairing roadways, picking up dead animals, etc., and operating light and heavy-duty equipment.
Requirements
  • Must be able to pass drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Must have a Class B CDL, learner's CDL, or be able to obtain CDL within 1 year of employment.
  • Must provide current driving record from DMV.
  • Must furnish own tools.
  • Posession of Virginia State Inspection is preferred or be able to obtain within 6 months.
