Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Athletic Trainer, Fellow to join our team at Keck Medicine of USC. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive sports medicine services to student athletes, including prevention, evaluation, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and coordinate student athletes' pre-participation physical examinations, including thorough histories of illnesses and injuries, and assessments of range-of-motion, muscle strength, and neurological function.
  • Perform special tests for joint stability, posture, and other specific pathologies, and stress preventative measures including bracing, padding, or taping.
  • Treat and evaluate injuries at practices and games, and administer first aid when needed, working with physicians or emergency personnel.
  • Provide daily counsel and treatment for injuries, and educate, instruct, and supervise athletes in the use of rehab equipment and exercises.
  • Evaluate athletes' physical condition, response, and progress, and discuss with appropriate physicians and Director of Athletic Medicine Operations.
  • Inform coaches of the status of student athletes' conditions, provide referrals to auxiliary medical personnel, and coordinate treatment plans for injured student athletes, as needed.
  • Monitor team practices, athletic equipment, sporting grounds, and environmental conditions at home and away competitions, ensuring safe training and playing conditions or advising coaches if unsafe.
  • Assist in coordinating and scheduling medical coverage for all team practices and competitions, and act as liaison to visiting teams' athletic trainers to ensure access to team physician and other necessary services.
  • Maintain medical records and forms for treatments given, complete injury or accident reports, and observe and assist the fitting of athletic or rehabilitative equipment.
  • Assist coaches in designing specific and/or individual conditioning, therapeutic, and rehabilitative programs for injured student athletes, and coordinate and schedule pre-participation physical examinations.
  • Perform duties while traveling and working nights and weekends, and report any misconduct or actions not in accordance with department guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Oversee and train assistants in physical therapy modalities, evaluate their competency, and supervise their performance of certain tasks, as needed.
  • Stay informed and knowledgeable of developments in the sports medicine field, as well as changing governmental and NCAA legislation and policies that may affect the sports medicine program's guidelines and decision-making.
  • Read pertinent literature, attend meetings, seminars, and conferences, and maintain certification from the Board of Certification (BOC) and National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA).
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Athletic Training or related field required.
  • Entry-level master's athletic training curriculum required.
  • Experience in injury prevention, clinical evaluation, immediate care, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning, organization, administration, and professional responsibility, as outlined by BOC required.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood-borne pathogens required.
  • Advanced proficiency in maintaining medical records, including the Family Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards required.
  • Ability to travel and work nights and weekends required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification from the Board of Certification (BOC) required.
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI) number required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association required.
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) required, if working within the following areas, employee is exempt from this requirement: Student Health Center and Athletics facilities (within 'B' occupancy).
