The Department of Exercise and Sport Science supports a robust undergraduate program with more than 1,400 majors across three specialization areas: Exercise and Sport Science, Fitness Professional, and Sport Administration. Additionally, the department offers a Master of Arts program with 60 students enrolled in three specializations (Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, Sport Administration) and a PhD program in Human Movement Science in collaboration with the UNC-CH School of Medicine.
The mission of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) is to advance knowledge in human movement to enhance the quality of life for individuals and society. This mission is achieved through interdisciplinary collaboration and securing competitive external funding through contracts and grants, which support the department's research and service initiatives.
The teaching, research, and service activities of the EXSS Department are backed by a dedicated faculty and staff, currently comprising 33 full-time faculty members, 9 part-time faculty, 20 joint appointment/adjunct faculty, 9 emeritus faculty, 34 full-time staff, and 4 part-time staff, along with 20 full-time Campus Recreation staff members.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver instruction to students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles in three undergraduate courses each semester, focusing on sport/exercise psychology, research methodologies, and physical activity.
- Promote an inclusive and equitable learning environment in alignment with the Department's and University's mission.
- Contribute to the department's expertise in sport and/or exercise psychology.
- Engage in departmental and university service and governance activities.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair.
