Overview:

  • The Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) is responsible for executing all respiratory care functions.
  • They will establish and deliver both standard and intricate respiratory therapy techniques to patients across all age groups within various hospital settings, particularly in emergency, neonatal, pediatric, and intensive care units, as directed by a physician.
  • Accountable for the management and operation of acute care ventilators utilized for both short and long-term mechanical ventilation for adults, children, and infants.
  • Practitioners are expected to work independently in the absence of the full-time Team Leader.
  • Maintain comprehensive departmental and hospital records, ensuring accurate data entry into the hospital's information system for therapies administered. Reports directly to the Unit Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Examine patient charts to confirm physician prescriptions and the appropriateness of ordered procedures, executing them accurately and promptly, in accordance with the facility's policy and procedure manual, including: Oxygen Therapy (tank, tent, mask, cannula, walker, high flow, etc.).
  • Provide instruction on coughing and deep breathing techniques, including Incentive Spirometry, and perform aerosol therapy (both bland and medicated), comprehensive pulmonary function testing, and nutritional assessments via calorimetry.
  • Conduct arterial punctures for blood gas analysis, following proper certification protocols, and engage in non-invasive monitoring.
  • Administer mechanical ventilation for neonates and critically ill adults in emergency and intensive care settings.
  • Perform patient assessments to determine treatment frequency and duration as prescribed by the physician.
  • Communicate with nursing staff and physicians regarding any discrepancies or concerns, and request reorders when necessary.
  • Implement and adhere to protocols outlined in the policy and procedure manual, as approved by the department and medical staff.
  • Monitor patient responses to therapy, documenting evaluations in the patient's medical record.
  • Promptly report any adverse reactions following established protocols.
  • Maintain accurate critical care records, including flowsheets and charts, documenting treatments and procedures immediately upon completion.
  • Input relevant information into the hospital's computer system accurately and thoroughly.
  • Respond to emergency situations within the hospital and assist in providing CPR/ACLS as certified by the American Heart Association.
  • Assist in the ongoing evaluation and renewal of therapy through direct communication with ordering practitioners as per policy.
  • Conduct oxygen rounds as necessary, ensuring the safe and effective use of supplies and equipment.
  • Facilitate the titration of oxygen according to established protocols.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in cleaning, sterilizing, assembling, and maintaining equipment, as well as stocking supplies in the department and patient care areas.
  • Provide comprehensive reports to incoming personnel and receive detailed reports from outgoing staff.
Qualifications:
  • Current licensure or written authorization to practice is required.
  • Immediate access to licensure during duty hours is mandatory.
  • Active registration with the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is essential.
  • Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and NRP are required.
  • PALS and CPFT certifications are encouraged and preferred.
  • Membership in AARC and/or CSRC is preferred.
  • A minimum of one year of prior hospital experience is required.
  • Experience in Emergency Room, Critical Care, Pediatric, and Neonatal settings is preferred.
