About the Role

Western National Insurance Group, a private mutual insurance company with over 120 years of experience, is seeking a highly skilled Risk Management Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will play a crucial role in managing loss control initiatives that contribute to the company's growth and profitability goals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Team Management: Select, coach, develop, mentor, and retain staff to ensure loss control best practices are in place and company, departmental, and individual goals are met.
  • Loss Control Strategy Development: Lead and provide input for the development, maintenance, and implementation of loss control guidelines, processes, priorities, procedures, and best practices to ensure the profitable growth of the company.
  • Staff Development and Training: Ensure alignment between staff skills/competencies with service strategy needs as well as internal best practices.
  • Skills Gap Identification and Development: Identify skills gaps and build development strategies in collaboration with leadership.
  • Workload Management: Effectively triage work to achieve appropriate utilization of loss control resource capabilities.
  • Loss Control Services: Provide loss control services for complex and larger service accounts that assist in the reduction of exposure and loss ratio and create and implement mutually agreed-upon annual service plans.
  • Risk Evaluation and Recommendations: Utilize expertise to adequately evaluate risk operations, exposures, and controls for underwriting and provide recommendations and resources to assist in the reduction of risk exposures to support company cost containment strategies in an effective manner.
  • Relationship Building: Build and maintain productive relationships both internally and externally by utilizing individual credibility and applying business insight to communicate risk factors.
  • Third-Party Partner Management: Assist in the management of third-party loss control partners.
  • Business Growth and Development: Independently and in partnership with marketing, claims, and underwriting, provide leadership in growing the book of business by promoting loss control services.
  • Customer Service and Issue Resolution: Review and resolve any service concerns and issues from policyholders and agents and report concerns to management when appropriate.
  • Decision-Making and Problem-Solving: Make decisions independently following established guidelines and procedures with room for discretion and interpretation.
  • Workload Direction and Prioritization: Determine which commercial risks to offer continuing account service and continually assess workload considering business priorities to direct workloads accordingly.
  • Policy Execution and Process Improvement
  • Customer Experience Standards: Consistently act according to our customer experience standards by responding quickly, maintaining a positive attitude, building rapport, demonstrating empathy, managing the customer's expectations, using the proper communication channel for the situation, and taking ownership to ensure the customer's issue is resolved.
  • Special Projects and Other Duties: Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Supervisory/Management Experience: Prior supervisory/management experience with demonstrated ability to mentor, coach, direct, and develop individuals.
  • Valid Driver's License: Valid and unrestricted driver's license and acceptable driving meeting underwriting standards required.
  • Presentation and Training Skills: Proven experience presenting technical training topics in an understandable format to large internal and/or external audiences.
  • Industry Knowledge and Best Practices: Demonstrated understanding and implementation of industry best practices and standards.
  • Advanced Knowledge of Industry Processes: Advanced knowledge of industry processes, hazards, and application of controls.
  • Knowledge of Industry Standards: Demonstrated knowledge and application of DOT, NFPA, OSHA, MSHA, CPSC, ACGIH standards, and ergonomics.
  • Business Insurance and Independent Agency Environment: Working knowledge of business insurance and independent agency environment.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient use of various core systems, office and computer equipment, and software packages.
  • Education and Certifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and related business or technical work experience in the area of insurance or occupational health and safety. Continuing education currently possessing one or more of the following certifications: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).
  • Travel Requirements: Ability to travel, including overnight, approximately 10%-20% of the time.
