General Overview of the Role


As a Sleep Study Technician, you will conduct clinical assessments, physiological monitoring, and testing to aid in the diagnosis, management, and prevention of sleep-related disorders using various diagnostic and therapeutic tools, providing care to patients across all age groups.

Your responsibilities will include utilizing tools such as polysomnography, scoring clinical events in accordance with professional and laboratory standards (including respiratory and cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.), and generating precise reports by compiling sleep/wake and clinical event data.

Key Responsibilities

Level 1 Responsibilities:

  • Verify medical orders and protocols.
  • Explain procedures and orient patients to the sleep center.
  • Prepare and calibrate testing equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Perform routine PAP mask fittings.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors following established standards.
  • Assist with baseline value documentation during 'lights out' procedures.
  • Observe polysomnography data acquisition.
  • Document observations, including sleep stages and clinical events.
  • Assist with patient safety interventions and therapeutic actions.
  • Verify data integrity during 'lights on' procedures.
  • Conduct routine polysomnography data acquisition while ensuring signal quality.
  • Identify and report any signal abnormalities.
  • Provide age-specific care in treatment, assessment, and education.
Level 2 Responsibilities:

  • Perform all Level 1 duties.
  • Review patient history, medications, and study protocols.
  • Prepare and calibrate equipment, making necessary adjustments.
  • Independently conduct routine and CPAP/split polysomnography data acquisition.
  • Implement necessary patient safety interventions.
  • Complete data collection processes and verify data integrity.
Level 3 Responsibilities:

  • Perform all Level 1 and 2 duties.
  • Analyze and integrate patient information to meet specific needs.
  • Explain pretesting, testing, and posttesting procedures to patients.
  • Conduct routine and complex PAP mask fittings.
  • Perform advanced polysomnography data acquisition while ensuring signal quality.
  • Follow procedural protocols to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Oversee and perform complex procedures and interventions.
  • Maintain equipment and troubleshoot issues independently.
  • Develop clinical standards and protocols.
  • Assign workloads to team members and process daily charges.
Qualifications

Education

Level 1


High school diploma or GED, or one year of post-secondary education, or current enrollment in an accredited program leading to an Associate's Degree in a health-related field focused on polysomnography.

Level 2


Associate's Degree in a health-related field preferred, or completion of a polysomnography program of at least one year associated with a state license and/or nationally accredited educational facility.

Level 3


Associate's Degree in a health-related field preferred in polysomnography, or completion of a polysomnography program of at least one year associated with a state license and/or nationally accredited educational facility.

Experience

Level 1


No experience required with an Associate's Degree in a health-related field; otherwise, six months of direct patient care experience.

Level 2

Preferred 18 months of experience in polysomnography testing or documented proficiency in all required competencies as a Polysomnography Technician.

If no Associate's Degree in a health-related field, an additional two years of direct patient care experience is required.

Level 3

Four years of experience in Polysomnography Technology required.

Licensure and Certification

Level 1

Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT) required. Maintain current BLS certification.

Level 2

Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT) required. Maintain current BLS certification.

Level 3

Registered Polysomnography Technologists (RPSGT) required. Maintain current BLS certification.
