Description/Distinguishing Features

This position involves performing semiskilled and routine tasks as an assistant to other vehicle and master mechanics, along with related duties as necessary. The role is designed as an entry-level opportunity with the expectation of advancement to a Vehicle Mechanic II position upon obtaining six State of Michigan certifications within a two-year timeframe. The work environment promotes open advancement, and wages may be adjusted after the probation period based on the skill level of the individual hired.

The responsibilities of this role include routine semiskilled tasks that require a commitment to efficient and effective performance. The employee will work under the guidance of the Shop Supervisor/Foreman, who will assign tasks to be completed. A Vehicle Mechanic I is expected to engage in progressively challenging tasks as part of their training for higher-level mechanic classifications. The work performed will be closely monitored throughout the process and upon completion.

Examples of Duties
  • Assists higher classification Mechanics and works independently as needed;
  • Conducts servicing of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and equipment; performs tire changes, battery checks, and lamp replacements;
  • Executes minor tune-up tasks; may disassemble and reassemble engines, clutches, transmissions, and differentials under supervision;
  • Supports the removal and installation of various components as required.
Essential Qualifications
  • Basic familiarity with common terminology, practices, processes, materials, and tools relevant to the vehicle mechanic trade; possesses good mechanical aptitude; demonstrates a willingness to learn and maintain good physical condition.
  • The role requires the use of torches and welders, along with heavy lifting, bending, and stooping in a potentially dirty, hot, and noisy environment.
  • Must be capable of lifting 50 pounds regularly and up to 90 pounds intermittently.
  • Some automotive knowledge and personal computer skills are necessary.
Acceptable Training and Experience
  • Completion of high school or trade school, with proficiency in reading comprehension and writing.
  • Some experience as a helper or skilled Vehicle Mechanic, or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Preference will be given to applicants with Michigan mechanic licenses and a Michigan Commercial Drivers license (CDL) "A" with air brake and tanker endorsement (N).
  • Must possess a personal set of mechanic's hand tools (minimum quality craftsman - all inclusive up through 1 - 1/8").
  • State or Emergency Vehicle Technician certification(s) are preferred.
  • Advancement to the Vehicle Mechanic II position is required within two years of starting as a Vehicle Mechanic I.
