Court Administrator Job Description

The Court Administrator serves as the chief administrative officer for the St. Joseph Circuit Court, responsible for coordinating court operations and providing administrative support to the Circuit Court Judge.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and direct assigned personnel, including analyzing human resource needs, reviewing documentation, interviewing candidates, and making hiring decisions.
  • Consult with and advise presiding judges, magistrate judges, and senior judges on court operations and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with state, county, and court legal processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Collaborate on the development of court procedures and related guidelines for the effective operation of the Circuit Court and its programs.
  • Manage local procurement, inventory, and supplies, as well as prepare and process Circuit Court payroll.
  • Perform various bookkeeping duties, including preparing and submitting claims and transfers, balancing books, and preparing budget reports.
  • Serve as liaison between the Circuit Court and various government, public agencies, and departments, offering assistance and explaining court procedures and practices as needed.
  • Prepare statistical reports for and communicate with the Indiana Supreme Court, Division of State Court Administration, and Indiana Judicial Center.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of local court rules and draft various legal documents.
  • Perform various clerical duties, including updating attorney lists, monitoring law book acquisitions and distributions, and maintaining office files and filing systems.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Paralegal Studies, Pre-Law, or related field preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of court practices and procedures, as well as the ability to assist various government and public agencies and departments as necessary.
  • Working knowledge of standard accounting/bookkeeping principles, with the ability to prepare budget and payroll expenditures, maintain department inventory, and supervise financial activities.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and direct, as well as communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, judges, and Court personnel.
  • Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Department information and records according to state requirements.
