Position Overview: The Accounting Technician serves as a foundational role within the Finance & Business Services Department, primarily focusing on administrative tasks, customer service, and support for customer accounts.
Key Responsibilities:
- Execute a variety of functions to assist the Finance & Business Services Department.
- Manage all activities related to the precise and prompt processing of accounts payable and receivable.
- Act as the main point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders.
- Handle customer inquiries and concerns through various communication channels.
- Calculate applicable fees, fines, and assessments as per regulations.
- Serve as the cashier for the City, managing monetary transactions and reconciling receipts.
- Prepare and reconcile subsidiary journals and ensure accurate postings to the general ledger.
- Maintain the integrity of the general ledger by creating and reviewing journal entries.
- Generate periodic financial and operational reports as assigned.
- Assist in the preparation of audit schedules for annual financial reporting.
- Provide professional and courteous assistance to the public, offering information and guidance.
- Support the monthly accounting cycle, including balance sheet reconciliations.
- Offer technical assistance to team members as needed.
- Process incoming and returned mail efficiently.
- Prepare various financial documents, including invoices and account statements.
- Provide backup support to other Accounting Technicians as required.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess a high school diploma or GED, with three years of relevant experience emphasizing customer service and office skills. Experience in bookkeeping and accounting, particularly in accounts payable and receivable, is essential. Proficiency in computerized accounting systems and a typing speed of at least 60 words per minute are required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of financial regulations and bookkeeping practices.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and accounting software.
- Ability to perform arithmetic calculations and maintain accurate financial records.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Working Conditions: This role is primarily conducted indoors, with minimal safety concerns. Interaction with customers may occasionally involve handling difficult situations.
