Position Overview: The Program in Journalism at Princeton University invites applications for the role of Visiting Ferris Professor of Journalism. This position is designed for accomplished journalists interested in imparting their knowledge through seminars focused on journalism and creative nonfiction.

Opportunities Available: We offer both full-time and part-time appointments for one-semester terms. Visiting Professors will engage in a dynamic academic environment that emphasizes ethical journalism and its role in democracy.

Responsibilities: Full-time faculty members are expected to dedicate themselves fully to teaching, attending campus four days a week, participating in faculty meetings, and engaging with the university community. Part-time faculty will be required to be present on campus for two full days each week during the term.

Course Structure: Seminars will be conducted weekly for three hours, with a maximum enrollment of 15 students. Students will engage in substantial preparation and submit assignments for critique during individual writing conferences. Guest speakers and class visits to media organizations may be included to enhance learning.

Compensation: The salary for part-time appointments is $37,500, while full-time positions offer a salary of $75,000.

Application Requirements: Candidates should submit a comprehensive résumé or CV detailing their professional achievements, a seminar proposal, and a cover letter expressing their teaching philosophy. Innovative and interdisciplinary course proposals are highly encouraged.

Course Proposal Guidelines: Proposals should include:

  • A brief overview of the course focus
  • A concise course catalog description (75 words)
  • Specific topics for each week of the course
  • A sample reading list of up to six titles
  • Potential writing assignments (typically 5-8 short pieces)

Essential Qualifications: Applicants must demonstrate a distinguished record in journalism or nonfiction writing, possess effective communication skills, and have a minimum of five years of experience in a news organization or major publications. A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.
