Job Summary

The City of Johnson City is seeking a skilled Motor Equipment Operator II to join our Public Works Department. As a key member of our asphalt maintenance crew, you will be responsible for operating heavy equipment, including dump trucks and construction machinery, to ensure the safe and efficient maintenance of our city's streets and infrastructure.

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires a high degree of manual dexterity, physical strength, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. You will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks, including digging out damaged sections of streets, shoveling, raking, and compacting hot-mix asphalt, as well as participating in snow plowing and other maintenance activities as needed.

As a Motor Equipment Operator II, you will have the opportunity to work with a range of equipment, including dump trucks, medium-duty trucks, and specialized construction machinery. You will also be responsible for maintaining the equipment in good working order, performing routine maintenance and repairs, and ensuring that all safety protocols are followed.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid Class B CDL issued by the State of Tennessee or ability to obtain within 120 days of employment
  • Pre-employment DOT physical, drug screening, and background check required
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to operate equipment over rough terrain occasionally under adverse weather conditions
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the operation and routine maintenance of trucks, specialized automotive equipment, or related automotive equipment
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing automotive equipment operation
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare required reports
