The Patient Financial Services Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting patients, healthcare providers, and internal customers with billing inquiries. This position involves managing insurance claims and patient accounts in accordance with departmental protocols and utilizing MPG electronic systems. A comprehensive understanding of insurance billing, reimbursement processes, CPT codes, modifiers, and fee schedules is essential. Additionally, the role requires the ability to interpret explanations of benefits and effectively communicate their implications to customers. This position entails conducting both telephonic and in-person discussions with patients regarding account resolutions and payment collections, as well as through secure messaging platforms. The specialist will also assist clients with hardship applications, payment arrangements, and service eligibility inquiries. Excellent verbal communication, interpersonal skills, and a professional demeanor are vital for interacting with customers.


Core Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Exhibiting outstanding interpersonal skills with patients, colleagues, and insurance representatives.
  • Safeguarding patient information in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Processing and posting payments to accounts on the same day.
  • Addressing patient concerns promptly, ideally within the same day.
  • Adhering to timelines for reprocessing claims after updating accounts with new information as provided by patients or providers, in line with insurance carrier guidelines.
  • Maintaining advanced knowledge of CPT codes and modifiers.
  • Staying informed about claim adjudication rules set by insurance carriers.
  • Meeting or exceeding monthly performance metrics and evaluations.
  • Reporting call trends to management for potential escalation when necessary.

Essential Knowledge and Experience

A minimum of an Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical institution; or six months to one year of relevant experience and/or training; or a suitable combination of education and experience. Experience in the healthcare and insurance sectors, along with a thorough understanding of insurance billing and reimbursement processes, CPT codes, modifiers, and fee schedules, is required.


Required Skills and Competencies

To excel in this role, candidates should possess strong computer skills and familiarity with EMR systems; knowledge of Athena is preferred but not mandatory. The individual will be required to perform venipuncture. While fulfilling the responsibilities of this position, the employee may occasionally need to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
