Sacramento, California, United States Department of Justice Full time

Position Overview

The California Department of Justice's Bureau of Firearms is dedicated to the fair administration and vigorous enforcement of firearms laws across the state. We are seeking a Crime Analyst I to support the Carry Concealed Weapons (CCW) licensing initiative.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of a Crime Analyst Supervisor, the Crime Analyst I will be an integral part of the CCW Background Team. This role involves providing essential firearms services to law enforcement agencies (LEAs) that are mandated by California law to submit LiveScan applications and renewal backgrounds to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for CCW licensing.

The Crime Analyst I will:

  • Evaluate the firearms eligibility status of applicants by utilizing criminal offender record information (CORI) and other relevant records within the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) and various law enforcement databases.
  • Generate notifications of authorization or denial based on eligibility determinations and communicate these to the applicant agency to finalize the firearms request.
  • Conduct annual reviews and monitor subsequent arrest notifications for authorized applicants, alerting licensing LEAs if any applicants become ineligible to purchase, possess, or own a firearm.

Additional Skills Required

In addition to processing background checks, the ideal candidate should possess the ability to:

  • Research and resolve incomplete or inaccurate records from reports and database systems.
  • Understand the intricacies of the criminal justice system, confidentiality, and relevant State and Federal laws regarding firearms eligibility.
  • Effectively communicate with law enforcement and government agencies via various channels to obtain necessary information for determining firearms eligibility.

Working Conditions

The DOJ has implemented a telework policy for employees capable of performing their essential duties remotely. Following an initial training period, this position may offer opportunities for telework, subject to current conditions and periodic evaluations.

Special Requirements

  • A background investigation must be successfully completed prior to hiring.
  • Applicants must clearly indicate the Job Control (JC) number and title of this position on their State Application.
  • A fingerprint check will be required.
  • This is a limited-term position for 12 months, with the possibility of extension up to 24 months or conversion to a permanent role based on operational needs.

Failure to submit the required application documents may result in disqualification from the application process.
