Sacramento, California, United States Department of Justice Full time

Position Overview

The California Department of Justice's Bureau of Firearms is dedicated to the fair administration and rigorous enforcement of the state's firearms regulations. We are seeking a Crime Analyst I to support the Carry Concealed Weapons (CCW) licensing initiative.

Key Responsibilities

Under the guidance of a Crime Analyst Supervisor within the CCW Background Team, the Crime Analyst I will provide essential firearms services to law enforcement agencies (LEAs) mandated by California law to submit LiveScan applications and renewal background checks to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for CCW licensing.

The analyst will evaluate the firearms eligibility of applicants by utilizing criminal offender record information (CORI) and other relevant records from the California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS) and various law enforcement databases. After making determinations, the analyst will generate notifications of authorization or denial and communicate these to the applicant agency to finalize the firearms request.

Additionally, the analyst will conduct annual reviews, monitor subsequent arrest notifications of authorized applicants, and inform licensing LEAs if any applicants become ineligible to purchase, possess, or own a firearm.

Required Skills and Qualifications

In addition to processing background checks, the Crime Analyst I should possess the ability to research and rectify incomplete or erroneous records generated from reports and database systems. A strong understanding of the criminal justice system, confidentiality, and applicable State and Federal laws and regulations regarding applicants' eligibility to purchase, possess, or own firearms in California is essential. Effective communication via phone, facsimile, or email with law enforcement and other governmental entities to obtain missing dispositions and warrants, as well as other critical information necessary for determining firearms eligibility, is also required.

Work Environment

The DOJ has implemented telework options for employees capable of fulfilling their essential job functions remotely. Following an initial training period, this position may offer opportunities for telework, with schedules subject to current conditions and potential reevaluation.

Special Requirements

  • Successful completion of a Background Investigation is required prior to hiring.
  • Clearly indicate the Job Control (JC) and the title of this position in the appropriate section of your State Application.
  • A background check and fingerprint check will be mandatory.
  • This is a 12-month limited-term position, with the possibility of extension up to 24 months or conversion to a permanent role based on operational needs.

Failure to submit the required application documents may result in disqualification from consideration.
