Our areas of focus include consumer law, domestic violence and family law, housing, public benefits, and appellate matters. We also engage in immigration issues and assist individuals facing the collateral impacts of their interactions with the criminal justice system. By learning from our clients' experiences, we strive to identify opportunities for legal reform, public policy advocacy, and impactful appellate litigation.

At Legal Aid, we believe that a meaningful approach to our anti-poverty mission necessitates a steadfast commitment to racial justice and equity. We aim to reflect the rich racial diversity of the communities we serve and to empower our staff and clients as effective agents of change.

The Consumer Law Unit is dedicated to helping clients safeguard their limited income and assets, specializing in foreclosure prevention and consumer debt defense. Additionally, we actively address consumer-related public policy issues.

The Intake Coordinator will primarily operate from Legal Aid's main office but may also work at various community-based locations. Flexibility for occasional evening and weekend hours may be required. A significant portion of the Intake Coordinator's responsibilities will involve serving as the initial point of contact for individuals seeking assistance from the Consumer Law Unit. • In-depth Interviews: Carry out comprehensive intake interviews with applicants.
  • Follow-up: Engage with applicants to gather necessary documentation to assist attorneys in case investigations.
  • Online Portal Management: Assist in managing the online intake application system, including initial screenings.

Data Management and Analysis

  • Input intake interview data into Legal Aid's client database and generate reports as needed.
  • Help collect data to monitor and analyze intake trends.

Administrative Duties

  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Consumer Law Unit Supervisor or Intake Program Director.

General Intake Tasks

  • Collaborate with other Intake Specialists to cover general intake responsibilities.
  • Monitor the general intake voicemail and return calls as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to racial, economic, and social justice.
  • Experience working with individuals in crisis or dealing with trauma.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Familiarity with online databases is a plus.
  • Preferred experience in legal, social services, or public benefits systems.
  • Bilingual abilities in Spanish, Amharic, or other relevant languages are advantageous.
  • Willingness to commit for a minimum of two years is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

The Intake Coordinator's salary will be determined based on years of relevant experience, with starting salaries reflecting the following:

  • Entry-level: $52,428
  • 3 years of relevant experience: $57,677
  • 5 years of relevant experience: $61,160

Legal Aid DC typically offers two salary increases annually, contingent on funding availability. We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including fully paid health insurance, retirement matching, paid holidays, annual leave, and sick leave.

Commitment to Diversity
