Seattle, Washington, United States IUNU Full time
Position Overview

At IUNU, we are enhancing the capabilities of agricultural producers to cultivate premium greenhouse crops through the integration of robotics, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. Our LUNA platform is utilized in greenhouses across over 15 nations, delivering essential insights such as yield predictions, pest identification, and germination statistics to farmers via mobile and web applications. By optimizing yield and minimizing waste, we are committed to creating a sustainable future filled with high-quality produce.

Role Summary: As a Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer at IUNU, your responsibilities will include the design, development, and enhancement of robotic systems that function reliably in the demanding conditions of a greenhouse. You will have a profound understanding of mechanical system design suited for challenging industrial settings, including IP67 waterproofing, managing high thermal loads in fluctuating ambient temperatures, and enduring significant vibration exposure. Your technical expertise will be complemented by your leadership capabilities, setting high standards for reliability and accountability for our operational fleet, while ensuring these standards are upheld during production. Your enthusiasm for engineering will drive you to collaborate effectively across teams, nurturing a collegial and innovative engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and enhance IUNU's robotic systems and their deployment across various product lines.
  • Set and maintain high standards for the mechanical components of our robots and hardware installations, emphasizing reliability, safety, and consistency.
  • Maintain system design schematics for both production and prototype robots, and create documentation for assembly and deployment.
  • Conduct site assessments, generate detailed installation drawings, and design components to support IUNU's robotic systems in mechanical greenhouse applications.
  • Identify and manage opportunities for manufacturing improvements (both in-house and outsourced) regarding cost, timeliness, and quality, making informed recommendations and trade-offs as necessary.
  • Author, maintain, and approve engineering drawings, build processes, and acceptance criteria, continuously enhancing quality assurance and compliance.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, firmware, application, and other mechanical engineers to effectively size, prioritize, and manage work items in an Agile framework.
  • Diagnose, triage, and resolve production issues and design or manufacturing-related challenges swiftly.
  • Engage in accelerated testing of components to determine MTBF, lifespan, maintenance cycles, and related acceptance criteria based on business requirements.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related technical discipline, typically with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Proficient in designing and analyzing components and assemblies using SolidWorks.
  • Experience in drafting and producing high-quality drawing packages for architectural purposes.
  • Solid grasp of principles, concepts, theories, and techniques in mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to translate non-technical inputs into objectively verifiable engineering requirements that result in customer satisfaction.
  • Capability to swiftly transform finalized designs into physical prototypes by generating engineering drawings, sourcing suppliers, navigating procurement challenges, and leading final assembly under tight timelines.
  • Proficient in writing clear and comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional critical thinking, communication, and time management skills.
  • Data-driven problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot, triage, and resolve mechanical, electrical, and software issues in production, design, and manufacturing contexts.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a related technical field.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering within regulated industries such as aerospace or medical.
  • Prior experience in robotics hardware implementation.
  • Familiarity with industrial design, DFA, and DFM.
  • Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing techniques and operating related equipment.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics or PCB layouts.
  • Experience in low- to medium-volume manufacturing environments involving large products.
  • Six Sigma training or certification.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and testing both static and dynamic systems.
  • Experience working within an early-stage or growth-oriented startup team.

We are seeking a candidate who values transparent communication and is adept at documenting and troubleshooting issues. You should be capable of effectively communicating with team members, including summarizing design decisions, test requirements, and root cause analyses. You are skilled in writing design, assembly, and maintenance documentation and presenting them logically. Comfort with ambiguity and a desire to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment are essential.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary plus equity.
  • Unlimited paid time off.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage.

Diversity Commitment:

At IUNU, we are dedicated to fostering a safe and inclusive workplace. We prioritize the happiness and success of all employees and strive to create an environment where individual differences are recognized, appreciated, nurtured, and respected.
