Position Overview
Surgical Support Specialist - Procedure Room
Key Responsibilities:
Exhibits Technical Proficiency:
- Efficiently manages and passes surgical instruments and supplies.
- Maintains the integrity of the sterile field and takes corrective measures as necessary.
- Applies fundamental aseptic techniques, including proper gowning, gloving, and draping.
- Ensures all equipment is operational prior to procedures.
- Assists the physician with necessary equipment during surgical procedures.
- Handles specimens in accordance with established protocols.
- Conducts counts of instruments and supplies as per established guidelines.
- Maintains adequate inventory levels and assists in the procurement of supplies.
- Prepares supplies for procedures based on preference lists.
- Continuously updates physician preference lists.
- Utilizes downtime effectively for productivity.
- Ensures supply levels are sufficient in the procedure room.
- Verifies functionality of all equipment before use.
- Anticipates needs and organizes equipment and supplies efficiently.
- Cleans all instruments and equipment before and after use.
- Participates in evaluating new supplies and equipment.
- Assists in the safe transfer and positioning of patients.
- Collaborates in preparing the procedure room.
- Ensures turnover times meet established standards.
- Selects appropriate sterilization methods and adheres to timeframes.
- Utilizes correct indicators for chosen sterilization methods.
- Safely operates sterilization equipment.
- Keeps accurate monitoring logs in compliance with hospital policies.
- Reports any deviations from sterilization protocols to the charge nurse.
- Confirms patient identity, allergies, and surgical site in accordance with protocols.
- Documents any abnormalities or previous injuries.
- Identifies the presence of internal devices, such as pacemakers or prosthetics.
- Follows established protocols for time-out procedures.
- Labels containers accurately for medications and solutions.
- Reads medication information aloud in coordination with nursing staff.
- Communicates essential medication details to the surgical team.
- Monitors irrigation solutions to assist in estimating blood loss.
- Seeks opportunities for professional development and demonstrates skills that contribute to quality outcomes.
- Assists in teaching aseptic techniques.
- Participates in relevant seminars and meetings.
- Serves on committees related to the procedure room.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- 2-4 years of relevant experience required; 5-8 years preferred.
- Proficient communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.
- Consistent attendance and good health are essential.
- Completion of initial competency verification for clinical areas is required.
- Familiarity with standard office technology in a Windows environment preferred.
- Knowledge of surgical instruments and patient care practices preferred.
