This is a contingent position that requires US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer-related information.
The successful candidate will support the JETS II contract in Houston, Texas, and will be responsible for providing non-metallic and fibrous materials expertise for the selection of soft goods exposed to different atmospheres, high vacuum, and extreme temperatures.
Key Responsibilities:- Support various NASA programs by providing technical leadership on the development of non-metallic materials and fibrous materials for use in Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) development.
- Act as primary reviewer and approver for NASA Material Usage Agreements (MUL) to ensure materials are compliant for testing performed in NASA thermal vacuum chambers.
- Provide technical support related to non-metallic and fibrous materials for R&D activities under the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) NASA programs.
- Review NASA reports, requirement documents, proposals, conference papers, and journal articles related to non-metallic and fibrous materials.
- Support NASA Materials and Processes (M&P) engineers with respect to the evaluation and selection of non-metallic and fibrous materials.
- Perform testing and characterization on non-metallic materials as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering and a minimum of 2+ years of experience in the field or in a related area.
- Extensive knowledge on polymer structure-properties relationship.
- Good understanding of different textile structures and their manufacturing methods.
- Working knowledge with high-performance polymers commonly used in fiber, film, or foam, such as Aramids, Polyimide, PEEK, PBI, PTFE, PVDF, etc.
- Solid understanding of different fiber properties.
- Experience with polymer characterization methods, such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM/EDS.
- Familiar with polymer testing standards.
- BS or higher education in Polymer Science and Engineering, Fiber Science, Material Science and Engineering, Textile Engineering, or related field; M.S. or PhD highly preferred.
- Prefer 5+ years of direct experience with textiles and polymer characterization, fiber science.
- Previous experience supporting a NASA program on structural textiles and soft goods development.
- Experience with product development.
- This position offers a 9/80 schedule, every other Friday off.
- This position may require some travel.

- Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.
- Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
