Position Overview

The Houston Landing is seeking dedicated individuals to enhance our mission of promoting democracy and enriching the lives of all Houstonians through impactful storytelling. As an independent and nonpartisan news organization, we are committed to public service journalism. This newly established role is part of our initiative to expand our education team, which will consist of five reporters, an editor specializing in education, and an audience engagement producer.

Role Responsibilities

The general assignment reporter will play a crucial role in supporting our education coverage by:

  • Reporting on breaking news and daily stories related to the beats covered by our education reporters.
  • Collaborating on enterprise stories with other team members, assisting in reporting, writing, and audience engagement.
  • Proposing and leading enterprise stories that align with our educational focus areas.
  • Developing informative resources such as guides and explainers pertinent to our target districts.
  • Working in tandem with the audience engagement producer to optimize content distribution to our target demographics.

Additionally, this role involves close coordination with our audience team to identify key community figures and platforms, ensuring our content effectively reaches its intended audience. We recognize that simply publishing stories is insufficient; building trust and establishing connections within the community is essential.

Qualifications

Fluency in Spanish is essential for this position, as a significant portion of the families in our target districts primarily communicate in Spanish. Proficiency in creating written and/or video content in Spanish is preferred.

  • A collaborative mindset, working effectively with various teams to deliver comprehensive news packages.
  • Experience in education reporting is advantageous, but we prioritize a fresh and audience-centric perspective.

Requirements

  • A valid driver's license, insurance, and access to a vehicle.

This position reports to Team Leader Jacob Carpenter, an accomplished education journalist recognized for his contributions to the field.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience, with a minimum of $70,000.
