Position Overview:


The Licensed Veterinary Care Specialist plays a crucial role in enhancing hospital operations by delivering exceptional veterinary care and outstanding service to our patients and their owners.

Key responsibilities encompass providing comprehensive patient care by assessing animal needs, performing examinations and diagnostic assessments, assisting in surgical procedures, delivering nursing support, managing feeding and care for patients, ensuring the availability of medical supplies and equipment, overseeing patient triage and discharge processes, and maintaining accurate medical records.


Core Responsibilities:


Assess animal needs through thorough examinations and interviews, reviewing treatment plans and records, and conducting laboratory tests and imaging studies.

Administer care to patients by monitoring vital signs, collecting samples, dispensing medications, and managing wound care.


Facilitate patient examinations and surgical procedures by preparing necessary supplies and instruments, escorting patients to examination areas, and providing restraint as directed by the veterinarian.


Deliver exemplary pet care by utilizing extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, pharmacology, and specialized equipment and medication administration.

Verify and dispense medications.


Ensure patients have access to food and water, maintain cleanliness in patient rooms and equipment; monitor patients for any clinical signs of illness.

As instructed, fill prescriptions and administer medications, ensuring proper documentation and security of controlled substances.


Uphold a safe and healthy environment by sterilizing instruments, sanitizing operational areas, storing sterile supplies, and adhering to legal regulations and standards.

Maintain accurate medical records by documenting patient conditions, responses, and changes; update the database promptly and accurately.

Communicate effectively with pet owners regarding patient status, as directed by the veterinarian.

Ensure equipment is well-maintained by following operational guidelines, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating repairs as necessary.

Manage inventory by placing orders for supplies, verifying deliveries, and maintaining records.

Enhance professional knowledge by engaging in educational opportunities and reviewing relevant literature.


Release pets to their owners as instructed; ensure that all animals are clean and properly groomed prior to release.

Follow and execute oral and written instructions.

Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Additional Responsibilities:
Depending on the specialty area assigned, the following additional functions may be required:

Dentistry

Conduct dental cleanings, polishing, and intraoral radiographs.

Administer nerve blocks.

Assist with dental procedures and oral surgeries.

Dermatology

Prepare and administer medications via various routes.

Perform ear cleanings and minor flushes.

Obtain skin scrapes and tape samples.

Prepare cytology samples for skin and ear conditions.

Induce and monitor anesthesia.

Place intravenous catheters.

Emergency Care

Assist veterinarians with emergency procedures and critical care.

Monitor vital signs, place catheters, and perform radiographic imaging.

Clean wounds and apply bandages or casts.

May require on-call availability for intensive care.

Imaging

Support veterinarians in various diagnostic imaging techniques, including digital radiography and ultrasound.

Integrative Care

Maintain logs of diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up results for tracking patient responses.

Internal Medicine

Research wellness and preventative care for patients.

Neurology


Execute technical procedures, including anesthesia support, catheter placement, venipuncture, IV injections, wound management, and surgical assistance.

Ophthalmology

Assist veterinarians with ocular examinations.

Conduct diagnostic tests as needed (e.g., Schirmer Tear Testing, Tonometry).

Radiology

Support veterinarians in delivering high-quality diagnostic imaging services for in-patients, out-patients, surgical, and emergency cases.

Surgery


Provide extensive surgical assistance by preparing patients, scrubbing in, and managing surgical equipment and supplies.

Two or more years of experience in veterinary care, surgical assistance, and nursing for hospitalized and critical patients.


Certification as a Veterinary Technician (CVT, LVT, RVT, or LVMT) preferred or as mandated by state regulations.


Knowledge and Skills Required:
Understanding of surgical preparation, monitoring, and recovery processes, along with basic nursing skills.

Ability to demonstrate proper techniques in catheter placement, phlebotomy, emergency care, and digital radiography.

Awareness of safety protocols to minimize exposure to bites, scratches, and potential injuries.

Capability to restrain patients following standard procedures.

Fill prescriptions and monitor sedation as directed by the veterinarian.


Ability to work in environments with sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning agents, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.

Exhibit confidence and reassurance when interacting with pets in distress, illness, or pain.

Approach job responsibilities with professionalism and maturity.

Flexibility in scheduling is essential, including availability for weekends and holidays.

This role involves physical demands such as lifting, cleaning, and continuous movement.


Depending on the assignment, tasks may require extended periods at a workstation or standing/walking.

May involve climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.


Some tasks may require the ability to lift or carry moderately heavy animals (up to 50 pounds).

Answer phones and perform additional duties as required by the practice.
