Key Responsibilities

Adhere to site-specific standard operating procedures (SOPs), manuals, and directives; comply with regulatory agency standards (CAP, JCAHO, Medicare, OSHA, state, FDA); stay updated by attending meetings or reviewing minutes; promptly acknowledge changes; engage with emails and informational resources; understand specimen processing principles to ensure optimal cytological preparations independently, following established protocols. Maintain laboratory equipment in a clean and functional condition, following established guidelines; demonstrate troubleshooting and corrective action capabilities for any instrument or specimen discrepancies; accurately obtain and organize specimens for further processing, adhering to established protocols. Process specimens using appropriate fixatives or decalcification agents, including specialized lymph node defatting techniques and preparation of flow cytometry media, according to established procedures; accurately label cassettes and maintain grossing stations and frozen section areas in a clean and operational state; manage slides, blocks, and tissues (including filing, retrieval, and disposal) in a timely and precise manner, following established protocols. Organize periodic quality assurance materials for pathology peer review promptly, according to established procedures; accession specimens, order procedures, enter level charges, and generate slide labels quickly and accurately, adhering to established protocols; manage supply orders to ensure adequate inventory levels at all times, according to established procedures. Process send-outs accurately and completely, following established procedures; perform cover-slipping and accurately label slides to assist in diagnostic evaluations; ensure stained slides are covered uniformly, maintaining cleanliness and absence of artifacts, according to established procedures; accurately label slides, ensuring alignment with the correct protocol, according to established procedures. Prepare and maintain the morgue and autopsy areas according to established procedures; assist pathologists during autopsies, which may include body opening and closing, according to established procedures and to the satisfaction of the pathologist; process, prepare, and stain cytology specimens to ensure quality results and accurate diagnoses by cytologists/pathologists; assist with fine needle aspiration (FNA) and bone marrow specimen collection and slide preparation, according to established procedures; uphold optimal technical quality in slide preparation and staining, according to established procedures. Execute necessary quality assurance and clerical tasks, according to established procedures. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
