Position Overview

The Wastewater Operations Specialist is responsible for overseeing the management and treatment of wastewater and biosolids. While prior experience or education in wastewater management is advantageous, it is not mandatory. The selected candidate will engage in a comprehensive training program lasting up to twelve months, working various shifts to understand processes under diverse operational conditions. Each operator must be capable of independently managing either facility upon completion of their training.

This role encompasses a range of responsibilities to ensure compliance with State and Federal discharge regulations, including:

  • Analyzing data from laboratory and on-site assessments,
  • Utilizing SCADA systems to formulate and execute appropriate responses to alarms at treatment facilities and lift stations,
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs while interpreting data according to established protocols,
  • Conducting preventive maintenance tasks,

The position necessitates the ability to acquire a Class IV Illinois Wastewater Treatment Operator certification. Additionally, it requires proficiency in operating heavy machinery, utilizing computers for data entry, retrieval, management, and interpretation, effective communication skills, and the capacity to collaborate as part of a team. A clean driving record and eligibility for coverage under District vehicle insurance are essential. The role also demands physical capabilities such as climbing ladders and stairs, traversing the facilities in varying weather conditions, and possessing sufficient visual and auditory acuity to communicate effectively and respond to alarms or warnings.

Employees are expected to reside within or relocate to within 20 miles of the District boundary within a specified timeframe after employment. A map outlining the residency boundaries is available on the District's website.
