Personal Support Specialist

Under the guidance of the program director and program manager, Personal Support Specialists are tasked with delivering assistance and guidance to clients in a manner that fosters autonomy and self-advocacy. Services provided to participants are based on individualized support plans and health care strategies. Upholding client choice, dignity, respect, and confidentiality is of utmost importance.
Shift: First
Schedule: Monday Through Friday 7:30am to 3:30pm
Key Responsibilities
- Enhance client independence through tailored instruction and support as outlined in their individualized support plan.
- Engage and advocate for clients during individualized support plan meetings, assessments, and team discussions.
- Educate, assist, and empower clients to become self-advocates.
- Document progress in required records.
- Prepare and organize necessary materials and supplies for program activities.
- Collaborate with the activity coordinator to create engaging monthly activity calendars.
- Support clients with personal care and hygiene needs in a respectful and sensitive manner.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment conducive to client well-being.
- Monitor and document vital signs such as blood pressure and weight as mandated by regulations.
- Practice universal precautions at all times.
- Manage program inventory by reporting supply needs.
- Ensure the health and welfare of clients.
- Communicate any concerns or safety issues regarding clients, staff, or the facility to the direct supervisor.
- Foster professional and respectful relationships within the agency and the community.
- Represent the agency positively and professionally in accordance with Catholic Charities' best practices.
- Adhere to designated working hours unless prior arrangements are made according to policy.
- Ensure clients are safely secured for transport as per their support plans.
- Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License within the first six months of employment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities for CNA:
- Understand regulations applicable to Aging Licensure.
Additional Responsibilities for CMA:
- Administer medications and treatments as directed by the Health Service Manager or physician.
Qualifications
- Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Preferred: 1-year experience in Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities; Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Medication Aid (CMA) may be required for certain positions.
- Certificates, Registrations, or Licenses:
- Valid driver's license, motor vehicle, and insurance required.
- Commercial Driver's License within the first six months of employment.
- Experience:
- Preferred: One year of experience working with the geriatric population and/or individuals with disabilities.
- Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in using a personal computer and familiar with Microsoft Windows products.
- Knowledgeable in obtaining blood sugar levels via finger stick.
- Capable of measuring vital signs.
- Communication:
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, and co-workers to provide or gather information, educate, and clarify.
- Exposures:
- Possible exposure to human bodily fluids.
- Exposure to varying climate conditions due to outdoor activities and transportation.
Physical Requirements
- Work Type: Moderately physical, requiring up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible force constantly to move objects.
- Mobility: Controlled mobility is necessary for all aspects of movement.
- Bending: Frequent ability to flex, extend, and rotate the body.
- Reaching: Occasional overhead and horizontal movement.
- Vision: Adequate vision to perform job responsibilities.
- Hearing: Adequate hearing to perform job responsibilities.
- Speech: Adequate ability to express ideas verbally.
- Coordination: Frequently operates equipment or performs duties requiring moderate ability.
- Manual Dexterity: Frequently performs tasks requiring moderate skill.
