Overview:
As a Sign Language Interpreter II, you will deliver essential interpreting services for students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have communication challenges. This role may also involve tutoring students with similar needs. The interpreting tasks may encompass intricate or specialized subject matter, necessitating advanced skills and fluent interpreting techniques.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide interpretation for advanced level classes that require rapid and significant interaction, utilizing specialized vocabulary.
  • Facilitate discussions in educational settings, including classrooms, conferences, and workshops, that cover complex topics.
  • Interpret in diverse environments such as seminars, workshops, and theatrical performances, accommodating multiple participants simultaneously.

Core Duties:
Interpret and convey classroom lectures, ensuring effective communication between deaf and hard-of-hearing students and their hearing peers, faculty, and staff. Engage in continuous learning to enhance your knowledge of American Sign Language, interpreting methodologies, Deaf Culture, and adhere to the professional standards set by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Mentor junior interpreters to foster their development.

Qualifications:
Completion of an Interpreter Training Program or an Associate of Arts Degree in American Sign Language, Interpreting, or a related discipline, along with three years of professional experience in interpreting for the Deaf and hard of hearing.

Certification Requirements:
Candidates must hold and maintain certification from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or achieve Level 3 certification from the National Association for the Deaf or the American Consortium of Certified Interpreters. Successful completion of an interpreting skills evaluation is mandatory.

Knowledge and Skills:
Proficient understanding of American Sign Language and interpreting techniques, along with an appreciation for Deaf cultural values and the broader issues within the deaf community. Ability to effectively interpret spoken messages into American Sign Language, build rapport, and assess the unique needs of each deaf or hard-of-hearing student.
