Overview:
As a Sign Language Interpreter II, you will provide essential interpreting services for students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or experience other communication challenges. This role may also involve tutoring students with similar needs. The interpreting tasks may encompass complex and specialized subject matter that demands advanced skills and fluent interpreting techniques.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver interpreting services for advanced and technical classes requiring quick and precise interaction.
  • Facilitate discussions in various settings, including classrooms, conferences, and workshops, focusing on intricate topics.
  • Interpret in environments such as seminars and theatrical performances, catering to multiple participants simultaneously.

Essential Duties:
Provide interpretation and translation for classroom lectures, ensuring effective communication between deaf and hard-of-hearing students and hearing faculty, staff, and peers. Enhance your knowledge of American Sign Language, interpreting methodologies, Deaf Culture, and adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct. Mentor junior Sign Language Interpreters.

Qualifications:
Completion of an Interpreter Training Program or an Associate of Arts Degree in American Sign Language, Interpreting, or a related discipline, along with three years of professional experience in interpreting for the Deaf and hard of hearing.

Certification Requirements:
Applicants must hold and maintain a skills certification from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or Level 3 certification from the National Association for the Deaf or American Consortium of Certified Interpreters. Successful completion of an interpreting skills evaluation is mandatory.

Knowledge and Skills:
Proficient understanding of American Sign Language and interpreting techniques, awareness of Deaf cultural values, and familiarity with general issues related to deafness. Ability to effectively interpret spoken messages into American Sign Language, build strong relationships, and assess individual needs of each deaf or hard-of-hearing student.
