Position Overview
The Advanced Sign Language Interpreter will provide essential interpreting services for students who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have other communication challenges. This role may also include tutoring responsibilities for students with similar needs. The position requires a high level of skill and proficiency in interpreting complex subject matter and specialized vocabulary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver interpreting services in advanced academic settings, facilitating communication between deaf and hard-of-hearing students and faculty.
  • Engage in discussions that require quick transitions between spoken English and sign language.
  • Interpret in diverse environments such as workshops, seminars, and conferences, often serving multiple participants simultaneously.
Essential Duties:
Provide interpretation for classroom lectures, ensuring clear communication between all parties involved. Enhance your knowledge of American Sign Language, interpreting methodologies, Deaf Culture, and adhere to the professional standards set by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. Mentor junior interpreters to foster their development.
Qualifications:
A degree from an Interpreter Training Program or an Associate of Arts in American Sign Language, Interpreting, or a related discipline, accompanied by three years of professional experience in interpreting for the Deaf and hard of hearing.
Certification Requirements:
Candidates must hold and maintain certification from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or equivalent credentials. Successful completion of an interpreting skills assessment is mandatory.
Knowledge and Skills:
Proficient understanding of American Sign Language and interpreting practices, along with a deep appreciation for Deaf cultural values. Ability to effectively interpret spoken language into American Sign Language while assessing individual needs to provide tailored support for each student.
