Overview

This role is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a reimbursement initiative for student loan payments. Key Responsibilities
  • Stay updated on PACS technology and industry trends.
  • Ensure patient imaging folders are accessible for review and interpretation.
  • Provide initial technical support, demonstrating independent judgment and initiative.
  • Address issues that may affect a single customer or span across multiple organizational boundaries.
  • Offer expert guidance on tasks, procedures, policies, and workflows related to PACS image processing.
  • Create and implement written guidelines, reference materials, and relevant background information.
  • Oversee the local program that assesses PACS-related equipment.
  • Conduct evaluations of various computer hardware brands.
  • Assess groups of display terminals or disk units for potential replacement.
  • Identify and track trends in equipment performance, maintaining records of PACS equipment issues.
  • Collaborate with the Veteran's Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA) Imaging manager to validate new procedures and/or equipment with VistA Imaging.
  • Analyze system and workflow challenges.
  • Work with vendors and service personnel to resolve hardware and software issues, logging problems into the vendor's service system and communicating these to other PACS Administrators.
  • Participate in the deployment, installation, and acceptance testing of new products.
  • Evaluate alternatives, weigh costs and benefits, and make recommendations for modifications, replacements, or new acquisitions.
  • Engage in the assessment of equipment needs for an integrated information system; analyze and evaluate PACS equipment requirements for automated systems across the agency and provide recommendations based on alternatives, costs, benefits, and technological needs to the PACS Committee.
  • Act as the primary Contracting Officer Training Representative (COTR) Point of Contact (POC) for PACS within the facility.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Paid Time Off: 37 days of annual paid time off per year (13 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays). Selected candidates may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service.

Parental Leave: After one year of employment, eligible for up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave related to the birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child.

Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full-time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may qualify for a childcare subsidy of up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs for qualifying children.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with contributions up to 5% by the VA.

Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance options (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).

Telework: Available on an ad hoc basis as determined by agency policy.

Qualifications

Applicants pending completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are fulfilled.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.
  • Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is necessary for assignments involving computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently.
  • Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or other recognized accrediting agencies.
  • Credentialing Standards: Compliance with Public Law 97-35, requiring that individuals administering radiologic procedures meet credentialing standards.
  • Exception for Non-Certified, Entry Level Candidates: This exception applies only at the GS-5 entry level technician.
  • Grandfathering Provision: All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements.
Physical Requirements: The position does not require a full physical. The employee occupational health office will require TB and immunization assessments.

English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS

Creditable Experience:

  1. Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice: Experience must demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with current radiologic technology practice.
  2. Quality of Experience: Experience is only creditable if earned after completion of the basic certification requirements.
  3. Part-Time Experience: Part-time experience is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time work week.
Specialized Assignment:

Radiology Administrator: Assignment to this grade level is restricted to those serving as the radiology administrator at medical facilities with comprehensive radiographic and imaging programs.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates:

Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-12
  1. Experience: At least one year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level that fully meets the KSAs at that level.
  2. Assignments: Higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity, and variety, performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
