Responsibilities


The ICU Charge Nurse is accountable to the Department Director for ensuring the quality of nursing staff and the delivery of patient care during their shift. This role also involves assisting the Director in the daily operations of the respective unit(s)/department.

The Charge Nurse will maintain direct communication with the Director and/or House Supervisor regarding unexpected patient care events and risk management activities within the patient care unit(s). Responsibilities include:

  • Effectively utilizing nursing personnel, assisting with scheduling, staffing, and assignments.
  • Providing direction, supervision, and evaluation of staff, including staff education as necessary.
  • Assisting with performance evaluations and related HR activities.
  • Assessing the availability of supplies and equipment, ensuring their proper use and functionality.
  • Collaborating with other department managers/supervisors to ensure seamless coordination of patient services.
  • Evaluating patient care delivery and quality of care/documentation consistently.
  • Directing staff to implement immediate changes in care plans to ensure patient safety and compliance with regulatory guidelines.

The Charge Nurse may conduct patient care within their scope of practice and clinical competency, ensuring patient safety and appropriate nurse-to-patient ratios. During such instances, the Charge Nurse will be temporarily relieved of their duties by the Director or designee, with documentation of these occurrences on the patient care assignment record.


Qualifications

  • Current and valid state RN License.
  • Current BLS certification upon hire and maintenance of certification.
  • Current ACLS certification within 30 days of hire and maintenance of certification.
  • Previous supervisory experience of one to two years in an acute care hospital, preferably in an ICU setting.
  • A minimum of one year of experience as a staff nurse in an acute care hospital; Critical Care experience preferred.
  • CCRN (AACN) certification within two years of hire is preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
