The Charge Nurse in the Emergency Department is accountable to the Department Director for ensuring high-quality nursing care and patient management during their shift. This role also involves assisting the Director with the daily operations of the unit.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain direct communication with the Director and/or House Supervisor regarding unexpected patient care events and risk management activities.
  • Effectively utilize nursing personnel, assisting with scheduling, staffing, and assignments.
  • Provide guidance, supervision, and evaluation of nursing staff, including educational support as needed.
  • Assist with performance evaluations and related HR activities.
  • Assess the availability of supplies and equipment to enhance patient flow and ensure efficient admission, discharge, and transfer processes.
  • Continuously evaluate patient care delivery and quality of documentation.
  • Direct staff to implement immediate changes in care plans to ensure patient safety and compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Conduct patient and family interviews upon admission and during rounds to enhance the patient experience.
  • Perform direct patient care within the scope of practice as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Valid Texas State Registered Nursing (RN) license required.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) within two years of hire preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a staff nurse in an acute care hospital Emergency Department required.
  • Completion of emergency pediatric courses within six months of hire for EDAP certified facilities.
  • Advanced or AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certificate within 30 days of hire for Non-OB facilities.
  • Minimum of four hours of CEU in Pediatric Training Classes per year preferred.
