Job Responsibilities- Collect blood specimens from patients of all ages, from neonates through adults, to obtain blood specimens, knowledge of processing specimens for analysis, and the ability to utilize the appropriate computer systems to register patients, facilitate billing, accession laboratory specimens, and provide information.
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
- Exhibit knowledge of adequate and correct collection requirements.
- Accurately perform accessioning procedures to ensure positive identification of the specimens.
- Use good problem-solving skills to recognize and resolve discrepancies as appropriate.
- Evaluate specimen suitability/acceptability and resolve or refer problems as necessary.
- Perform testing and record Point-of-Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
- Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols as assigned.
- Follow established reporting procedures, computerized, verbal, and manual, as appropriate.
- Record and report problems and solutions as necessary.
- Navigate and access multiple computer applications, including laboratory and hospital computer systems, and the internet as needed.
- Adhere to policies and procedures, including compliance policies.
- Provide phlebotomy coverage as required to group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.
- Successfully complete initial and subsequent competency exams.
As a phlebotomist at Geisinger Health System, you will support our mission of providing exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services. Our phlebotomists are the friendly faces that collect samples to be analyzed by our state-of-the-art labs. Supporting a varied patient population, you will be responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting.
There are many other tasks our phlebotomists complete, such as troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, as well as aiding our patients. We have many different skill levels in our labs, from new to experienced phlebotomists, and all skill levels are well utilized. Geisinger Health System employs phlebotomists in roles I, II, and III. We also have numerous staff members who pursue their ASCP certification and become trainers for our department.
Phlebotomist I, II, and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation. Salary commensurate with experience. Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA), or similar will be considered. Military experience will be considered, including US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties.
EducationHigh School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) is required.
ExperienceA minimum of 1 year of healthcare experience is preferred.
Certification(s) and License(s)Member of National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Services (NAACLS) is required.
