Staff Reliability Engineer

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure application availability and quality of service
  • Oversee application health, including impacts from changes introduced by development, maintenance infrastructure, and configuration
  • Communicate production issues to the business
  • Ensure adherence to business SLAs and OLA
  • Manage applications' life cycle, including technology currency and sun-setting
  • Ensure applications align with technology and business roadmaps
  • Develop options to maximize investments
  • Ensure disaster recovery solutions are in place
  • Comply with initiatives such as PII, SOX, PCI, and DATP
  • Remediate and remove production incidents
  • Drive incident reduction, mean time to resolve, and asset currency improvement
  • Update knowledge base matrices and documentation
  • Validate code repositories and remediate vulnerabilities
  • Manage vendor resources and onboard/offboard management
  • Reverse demand events ownership
  • Cyber events management
  • CAB meetings
  • PlanIT updates
  • RBAC approvals
  • SME/troubleshooting
Business Relationships
  • Treat business account managers like their own business
  • Ensure priority maintenance and enhancement business needs are met
  • Communicate relevant activities, outages, or impacts
  • Understand business partners' goals and provide consultative advice
  • Support business case development for significant enhancement requests
  • Partner with business, IT Delivery Leads, and architecture to define business strategy
  • Continually engage with Value Streams as a Stakeholder
  • Look for opportunities to increase customer satisfaction and deepen business relationships
Technical Application Management
  • Oversight of asset integrity
  • Capacity planning of environments
  • Support simplification and rationalization efforts
  • Ensure asset currency needs are met
Maintenance Delivery
  • Delivery of non-discretionary and discretionary maintenance
  • Manage staffing/sourcing mix and vendor relationships
  • Ensure coordination with Invest/Project Delivery
Release Management
  • Ensure application readiness for release
  • Participate in pre and post-release meetings
  • Participate in release implementations
  • Ensure quality standards and refine best practices
Vendor Management
  • Responsible for SLA and KPI reporting
  • Monitor and manage sourcing capacity
  • Maintain sourcing partner relationships
  • Execute multi-year sourcing production support and maintenance contracts

Qualifications

Degree in Computer Science or related discipline with a minimum of 5-7 years of work experience in IT systems operations and application development.

Preferably some experience in an SRE role.

Good software engineering skills, preferably with experience in Java, Pega, Identity and Access Management products, and Front-End technologies like Angular.

Understanding of Linux system internals, familiar with the TCP or IP stack, network routing, and load balancing.

Command of Observability tools, automation tools, and CI/CD pipeline tools.

Ability to approach troubleshooting systematically and have a deep sense of ownership.

Design and development skills extend to service design patterns, APIs, UI/UX frameworks.

Ability to root cause sources of instability in a high-traffic, distributed system.

Understanding of large-scale complex systems from a reliability perspective.

Experience with cloud technologies and relevant certifications a plus.

Strong relationship building skills

Exceptional communication skills - written and verbal

Excellent presentation skills and ability to formulate ideas for presentation to upper management

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market.

Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency, and demonstration of competencies required for the role.

The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.

The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$126,160 - $189,240
