Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for conducting laboratory analyses that support the diagnosis and management of medical conditions. This role involves assisting in the collection, processing, and evaluation of tests as requested by healthcare providers. Clinical Laboratory Specialists possess the ability to understand the interrelatedness of various tests and are knowledgeable about physiological factors that may influence test outcomes, which are critical for physicians in identifying the presence, severity, and potential causes of diseases.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Employs independent judgment to perform both standard and intricate laboratory analyses utilizing diverse techniques, instruments, and equipment to assist healthcare providers in diagnosing and managing diseases.

2. Utilizes professional judgment to efficiently prioritize and assess varying test requests.

3. Adheres to established protocols for the collection and processing of biological specimens.

4. Executes analytical testing procedures with a high degree of accuracy and precision.

5. Exhibits scientific understanding of testing principles, analytical methods, and their implications, facilitating appropriate interpretation in relation to disease and physiology. Integrates various data to troubleshoot issues.

6. Implements and oversees quality control measures, new equipment, and/or methodologies.

7. Performs tasks efficiently while maintaining a clean and organized work environment.

8. Engages in educational initiatives within the department.

9. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to address the physical, psychological, social, educational, and safety needs of patients across all age groups.

10. Undertakes additional responsibilities as required.

Additional Information:
Technical Skills
1. Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment, particularly in multiple laboratory disciplines, is preferred.

2. Experience collaborating with various organizational levels is essential.

3. Background in healthcare is advantageous.

4. Proficiency in MS Office applications [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is necessary.

Education and Qualifications
1. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related scientific field, with successful completion of an internship in Medical Technology or equivalent laboratory experience as recognized by ASCP and CLIA standards is required.

2. Certification: Certification or eligibility for certification by ASCP at the Technologist level or grandfathered at the Technologist level prior to 2004 is mandatory. Certification must be obtained within 12 months of starting the position.

3. Relevant Experience: A minimum of 1 year in flow cytometry is preferred.

4. Supervisory Experience: None required.
