About the Job

We are seeking a highly skilled Heavy Equipment Mechanic III to join our team at the Colorado Department of Transportation. As a Heavy Equipment Mechanic III, you will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing heavy equipment and vehicles to ensure they are in safe operating condition.

Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and repair heavy equipment and vehicles, including snowplows, tractor-trailers, bulldozers, and motor graders.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, including routine checks, inspections, and adjustments on equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Complete annual DOT safety inspections on the vehicle fleet and certify vehicles for 49 CFR 396 DOT compliance.
  • Diagnose equipment components for defects or malfunctions, utilizing a wide range of test equipment.
  • Test drive vehicles and test operation of equipment and components.
  • Fabricate, modify, and install special equipment or replacement parts as needed.
  • Design, fabricate parts and special tools needed for unique or emergency situations.
  • Set up and install new equipment by means of fabricating or modifying to CDOT specifications.
  • Perform record keeping and documentation on all assigned units; tracks equipment maintenance, repairs and keeps Federal DOT Inspection records on all equipment.
  • Order and procure parts, supplies, and materials to keep equipment functional.
  • Prepare work orders in SAP.
  • Prepare materials estimates.
  • Work with the priority of safety over production for self, co-workers, and the traveling public.
  • Maintain technical knowledge of safety procedures and guidance materials, including Safety Manual and Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Equipment manufactures safety guides, OSHA publications.
  • Abide by all safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Attend safety training and participate in tailgate safety talks.
  • Continuously learn and develop job knowledge and skills through on-the-job training and training courses both on line and in person.
  • Participate in regional trainings, work unit meetings, informal exchanges, committees, and task forces.
  • Attend new equipment commissioning trainings held by equipment vendors.
  • Maintain technical knowledge of equipment, tools, and materials and adapt to any changes, updates, and any technology improvements or changes.
Requirements
  • Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including at least one year of experience with diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment.
  • Satisfactory completion of a formalized apprenticeship program or higher level non-correspondence coursework from an accredited college or technical school in automotive and diesel equipment mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid Commercial Driver's License Class A with no restriction on air brakes.
  • Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.
  • May be required to pass a controlled substance test (i.e. drug test), and DOT physical through our medical provider.
  • Essential Services Designation: Required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare.
  • New employees are required to attend two weeks of maintenance training in Aurora, while veteran CDOT employees are required to attend training one week out of each year in Aurora.
  • Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including weekends and holidays.
  • Must provide the supervisor with a telephone number where you can be reached for the purposes of responding to an emergency.
