Position Overview:

The role of Counsel/Senior Counsel specializing in Real Estate Transactions is designed to deliver comprehensive legal support and strategic advice to Southern Company concerning a wide array of real estate issues. This position will engage directly with internal teams while also collaborating with external legal advisors on various real estate and corporate dealings, encompassing fee simple acquisitions and sales, easements, leases, licenses, and other commercial contracts.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret real estate agreements and documentation.
  2. Engage in negotiations with opposing legal representatives on diverse real estate matters, including sales, leases, licenses, and related transactions.
  3. Oversee and guide external legal counsel managing transactions, litigation, negotiations, and associated issues on behalf of the organization.
  4. Collaborate closely with the Litigation and Real Estate teams to provide strategic counsel on real estate transactions, property management, operational policies, and initiatives.
  5. Foster constructive working relationships with internal business stakeholders and external legal advisors.
  6. Identify and implement improvements in legal processes and operational efficiencies.

Qualifications:

  1. Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent law degree from an American Bar Association accredited institution.
  2. Active legal license in one or more states where Southern Company operates.
  3. A minimum of 4 years of experience in real estate law, either as in-house counsel or in private practice, with substantial experience in litigating real estate and property disputes.
  4. Proficient in various real estate matters including acquisitions, sales, leases, licenses, easements, and due diligence processes.
  5. Familiarity with relevant utility statutes, regulations, and guidance documents is preferred.
  6. Ability to swiftly evaluate risks and convey complex information clearly and effectively.
  7. Proven ability to cultivate relationships with internal and external partners to enhance effectiveness.
  8. Demonstrated capability to manage multiple projects with competing timelines.
  9. Strong commitment to inclusion, innovative thinking, practical solutions, and exceptional customer service.
  10. High ethical standards and professional conduct.
  11. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  12. Robust analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  13. Able to independently handle complex projects.
