Position Overview

Summary:

The Healthcare Support Specialist will undertake a variety of responsibilities within the medical facility. The role primarily involves assisting in the examination and treatment of patients under the guidance of a Physician, Physician Assistant, or Family Nurse Practitioner. This position requires direct interaction with patients and collaboration with front office personnel, all under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with clinicians to manage all aspects of patient flow within the facility.
  • Assist clinicians with medication and laboratory results as instructed.
  • Guide patients to examination rooms, conduct patient interviews, measure vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and accurately document information in patient records.
  • Prepare examination rooms for patient assessments.
  • Manage inventory and order medical supplies and materials as needed.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment, including electrocardiographs (EKG), and coordinate scheduling for patient tests.
  • Administer injections or treatments and perform routine laboratory tests.
  • Input data into the computer system to maintain accurate office and patient records.
  • Ensure cleanliness and disinfection of examination rooms in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Sterilize and disinfect medical instruments according to OSHA guidelines.
  • Adhere to policies and procedures, including universal precautions as outlined by OSHA's Blood Borne Pathogens and Hazardous Materials standards.
  • Exhibit strong interpersonal skills to foster positive public relations with patients and colleagues.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  • Participate in mandatory meetings, training sessions, and educational programs.
  • Ensure compliance in sending letters to primary care providers and care plans.
  • Oversee VFC coordination and ordering processes.
  • Administer immunizations and document them in the electronic health record system.
  • Verify that all logs, forms, records, and charts are complete and accurate.
  • Document temperature readings for freezers and refrigerators.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and reliable attendance.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
  • Process requests for medical records.
  • Engage in designated Quality Improvement initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification as a Medical Assistant.
  • Basic CPR (BCLS) Certification.
  • Positive attitude, teamwork orientation, and ability to follow supervisory directions.
  • Understanding and promotion of the health center's mission, vision, and values within the workplace and community.
  • Sensitivity to the diverse needs of a multicultural population.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to handle dissatisfied patients respectfully.
  • Experience in a medical office or Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) setting.

Language Skills:

  • Strong organizational, writing, and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English is required; proficiency in Spanish is preferred.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to interpret various instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule formats.

Equipment Used: Fax machine, copier, computer, telephone, electronic health record system, sterilization equipment, and other necessary software and instruments.

  1. Ability to alternate between standing and sitting, with approximately 50% of time spent on feet and 50% seated.

  3. Constant need for activities such as writing, typing, and manual dexterity.
  4. Occasional lifting or carrying of items over 20 pounds, with frequent lifting of items under 10 pounds.

Vision Requirements: Constant need to complete forms, read reports, and view computer screens, with frequent need to see small details.

Hearing Requirements: Constant need to communicate effectively over the telephone and in person.

Travel Requirements: Occasional need to use personal transportation for site visits and meetings.
