Job Summary

The Nurse Supervisor - Patient Care Leader is a key representative of patient care and hospital administration on all shifts. This role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of quality patient care and accomplishment of the goals and objectives of UnityPoint Health - Finley Hospital, on a shift-to-shift basis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supervises and supports nurses' clinical role in patient care, providing clinical skill assistance as needed.
  • Facilitates requests for supplies and equipment to support patient care processes and outside requests for information and assistance.
  • Handles any occurrences during the shift, ensuring appropriate documentation and communication.
  • Collaborates with patients, family members, and physicians to ensure needs are met and problems are resolved.
  • Determines issues to be referred to the Administrator-on-Call.
  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among healthcare teams by communicating information, responding to requests, building rapport, and participating in team problem-solving methods.
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by monitoring confidential information processing.

Hospital Representative

  • Makes rounds throughout the hospital to monitor quality of patient care and safety, responds to situations involving patients, unit, staff, and visitors, and provides a resolution.
  • Monitors compliance to hospital policies, rules, and regulations, documents and communicates noncompliance to appropriate personnel.
  • Assists staff in complying with state and federal regulations.
  • Interprets and supports philosophies and policies of the nursing division to UPH personnel, collaborates with other departments to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Administrator-On-Call and external agencies, consults with Nurse Manager/Director or other Administrative representative concerning matters that require immediate attention beyond their scope of authority.

Patient Flow

  • Oversees determination of staffing needs and staffing decisions as made in the Access Center.
  • Assists in monitoring performance of nursing units and nursing services, and in identifying the training and development needs of staff.
  • Oversees bed control by determining and verifying bed assignments with the Access Center as needed.
  • Evaluates utilization of personnel, supplies, equipment, and physical facilities for optimum effectiveness and working conditions.
  • Adapts to the changing needs of the hospital and accepts responsibilities to meet those needs.

Crisis Management

  • Coordinates initial response to emergent situations that impact hospital operations and patient care per emergency management policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of accredited nursing program (Must obtain BSN within 5 years of hire)

Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree in Nursing

Experience:

At least two years of professional experience in hospital nursing

Previous supervisory experience

License(s)/Certification(s):

Current licensure in good standing to practice as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.

Must possess and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or within three (3) months from date of hire.

Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Must be knowledgeable about nursing care principles and practices.

Demonstrates effective communication skills, problem solving, critical thinking, and conflict resolution.

Knowledge of Joint Commission Standards.

Other:

Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position.
