Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Specialist to join our team at Corewell Health. As a Medical Laboratory Specialist, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing a variety of routine and specialized tests and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Test Performance: Independently perform routine and complex chemical, hematologic, microscopic, morphologic immunologic, and/or microbiologic procedures using laboratory instruments or manual techniques.
  • Result Release: Release quality patient test results, evaluate instrument performance, and correlate results with other laboratory data and/or disease states.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Standardize, calibrate, perform preventative maintenance, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Quality Assurance: Participate in quality assurance and regulatory agency activities, including performance of proficiency testing, involvement in TQM/CQI committees, and development of quality assurance monitors.
  • Team Leadership: Provide direction and guidance to medical laboratory technicians and other laboratory personnel, and communicate with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare workers regarding lab results, procedures, and technology.
Requirements
  • Education: Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college/university with 16 semester hours in biology and 16 semester hours in chemistry.
  • Certification: U.S. certification, certification eligibility, or certification assessment by a recognized certifying agency, such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the American Medical Technologists (AMT).
Working Conditions
  • Physical Effort: Requires considerable walking and standing, with occasional light lifting to store supplies.
  • Work Environment: Works in a clinical laboratory with hazardous reagents and infectious materials, with potential risk of exposure to hazardous medications or waste materials.
