Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Dental Assistant with Expanded Function to join our team at UPMC. As an EFDA, you will assist licensed oral surgeons/dentists in providing high-quality patient care and contribute to the success of our dental clinic.

Responsibilities
  • Assist dentists and oral surgeons in restorative procedures, including placing and removing retraction chords, monitoring post-surgical bleeding, and carving amalgams.
  • Perform mouth mirror inspections, place and remove dental dams, and apply topical fluoride.
  • Pour, trim, and evaluate diagnostic casts, size and place orthodontic bands and brackets, and assist with basic restorative and surgical procedures.
  • Remove sutures, dry canals, tie in archwires, and apply pit and fissure sealants.
  • Take preliminary and final impressions, place and remove matrix bands, and fabricate and place temporary crowns.
  • Perform coronal polishing, place and remove rubber dams, and place and finish composite resin restorations and/or sealant material.
  • Assist with training of dental assistant students and shadow and assist dental students and dental assisting students during rotations.
  • Perform radiographs, as instructed, and demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of dental equipment.
  • Assure that dental equipment is in good functioning order, maintain an adequate inventory of dental supplies, and prepare purchase order forms.
  • Perform sterilization of dental equipment, maintain operatory disinfection, and ensure proper handling of biohazard waste products.
  • Provide a safe and secure environment for patients, demonstrate understanding of age-specific needs of dental client populations, and demonstrate appropriate precautions for blood/body fluid exposure.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an approved Dental Assistant Program.
  • Certificate from an approved Expanded Function Dental Assistant Program.
  • At least one year of experience as a Dental Assistant.
  • Radiology Certification for capturing radiographs.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
