State Government Relations Director

Join the American Heart Association as a State Government Relations Director and play a critical role in shaping the future of health and wellness in Montana and Wyoming.
About the RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as our primary representative to the assigned state legislature and relevant state agencies. As a State Government Relations Director, you will be responsible for generating awareness and support for our public policy agenda, strategically coordinating efforts to foster state public policy priorities, and working with Association staff, volunteers, coalitions, and partner organizations to build support for our policy issues.
Key Responsibilities- Meet with members of the state legislature, their staff, and other state government officials to gain support for our advocacy issues.
- Monitor and engage on state-level legislative and regulatory issues of concern to the American Heart Association and apprise appropriate American Heart Association volunteers and staff of emerging advocacy issues.
- Provide policy research, development of support materials, recruitment of spokespersons, preparation of testimony, and other activities as needed to advance our legislative agenda.
- Participate in coalition building efforts and collaborative partnerships to leverage opportunities that advance our advocacy issues.
- Recruit membership for and provide staff support to volunteer state advocacy committee(s).
- Collaborate with the committee to develop an annual state legislative agenda.
- Provide strategic direction on statewide grassroots and key contact, recruitment, retention, and mobilization efforts.
- Provide strategic direction and support materials for state lobby days and/or local in-district meetings.
- Collaborate with communications staff partners on development and timing of media advocacy efforts.
- Prepare required reporting information including local, state and/or federal lobbying reports and other reporting as needed.
- Provide advocacy presentations and training opportunities to volunteers and staff as needed.
- Attend and participate in relevant American Heart Association meetings throughout the year, including national and affiliate staff training, affiliate and state-level meetings with staff partners, and metro board meetings.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, or a related field, or equivalent work experience. The ideal candidate will have three years of experience and success in legislative and regulatory lobbying, three years of demonstrated experience building and managing issue advocacy coalitions, and three years of experience developing and implementing grassroots and media advocacy tactics.
The successful candidate will possess outstanding oral and written communications skills, policy analysis and technical (legislative and regulatory) writing skills, and the ability to simultaneously manage multiple, sophisticated projects in varying stages of development under time constraints.
