About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical and Quality Engineer to join our team at Orica. As a key member of our Quality and Continuous Improvement team, you will be responsible for driving and delivering improvement in quality of goods and services throughout our supply chain.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drive and deliver improvement in quality of goods and services throughout our supply chain.
  • Work with the Reliability Engineering function to support root cause analysis of field issues to reduce warranty costs.
  • Provide overall quality engineering excellence to ensure that we maintain our leading position in the market.
  • Be a local Engineering resource in Tucson, providing guidance and support to procurement and assembly teams.
  • Undertake ECRs required to source parts locally, correct errors in documentation, improve quality, improve reliability, or reduce costs.
  • Support the Brisbane base engineering team in transferring new designs from Australia to Tucson.
  • Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, as well as assembly technicians, product managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement quality standards for materials, components, and finished goods.
  • Assist with new Vendor selection through assessment of their quality capability.
Key Accountabilities

  • Build safety into designs and methods of working.
  • Responsible for the delivery of clear and precise manufacturing documentation.
  • Completion of tasks and projects as assigned on time, with products meeting the demanding requirements of our customers.
  • Apply effective problem-solving techniques to assist our support teams in the resolution of product issues.
  • Provide design, development, and technical input to our development projects.
  • Ensure quality assurance relating to testing, acceptance, and verification of designs prior to release.
  • Develop strong IP for Orica.
  • Provide critical review and guidance to teammates' analysis and design.
  • Support manufacture, build, and validation of systems.
  • Carry out Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) in a timely manner.
  • Reviews of products, process, and systems on an ongoing basis to determine where improvements can be made.
  • Conduct RCA (Root Cause Analysis) into quality incidents relating to products or processes.
  • Conducts internal audits to assess compliance to our Quality Management System.
  • Lead FAI (First Article Inspections) of new products or design updates.
  • Train local assembly technicians in the assembly of new products.

Capabilities

Mandatory:

  • Experience designing mechanical systems.
  • Development of test plans for both development and production testing.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, particularly verbal and documentation skills.
  • Highly motivated individual, able to set priorities and meet deadlines, a strong team player.
  • Leadership skills.
  • Project management skills.
  • Experience with the SolidWorks toolchain.

Desirable:

  • Experience certifying products to international standards (e.g. IEC).
  • Product development in the mining industry.
  • Experienced with creating customer relationships around product innovation.
  • Development of Business cases.
  • Experience in process improvement and quality.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
Your Qualifications

Mandatory:

  • University Degree in an appropriate Engineering discipline.
  • 3 years' experience in engineering.

Desirable:

  • PE (Professional Engineer) or CPEng (Certified Professional Engineer).
  • Product design experience including design, prototyping, testing of complex engineering equipment and/or systems.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in process improvement and quality.
Proven Potential or Track Record of Success

More than 2 years' experience in a commercial environment.
