Job Summary

Cary Medical Center is seeking a highly skilled Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Laboratory team. As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will play a critical role in the diagnosis and treatment of disease by performing routine and specialty laboratory tests.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain optimal quality specimens from inpatients and outpatients
  • Respond promptly to computer orders and telephone requests
  • Identify patients properly and demonstrate outstanding customer service skills
  • Explain procedures to patients and answer questions appropriately
  • Complete draws with one needle stick to obtain sufficient quantity of specimen greater than 95% of the time
  • Label all tubes correctly and completely
  • Respond promptly to STAT and URGENT requests
  • Follow Universal Precautions
  • Perform all types of laboratory procedures without supervision, following procedures as approved by the Laboratory Medical Director
  • Ensure equipment, instruments, and reagents are in working order and readily accessible for co-workers
  • Work diligently to process specimens and obtain results in a prompt manner
  • Promptly report critical values
  • Assure QC is acceptable before reporting patient results and document remedial actions taken
  • Complete proficiency tests as assigned in the same manner patient tests are completed
  • Take an active role in mentoring students of Medical Technology
  • Perform CLIA required control activities and consistently include quality control material as outlined in the standard operating procedure(s)
  • Dilute and repeat tests outside the instrument's linear range
  • Perform linearity, correlation, and/or precision checks as scheduled
  • Maintain instruments; troubleshoot and repair as necessary and document repairs on all equipment
  • Notify Lab Primary Charge of instrument or procedural problems immediately
Requirements
  • Meet organizational requirements and work habits while promoting a collaborative and cooperative environment
  • Actions reflect a positive approach to work
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with others in a team environment and build rapport with teammates
  • Assist phlebotomy staff as necessary to provide prompt, compassionate customer service to all patients
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned
  • Comply with Federal, State, and Local government regulations
Licenses & Education
  • Bachelor's Degree or Associates Degree in medical laboratory technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical, or biological science or have successfully passed the HEW CLT examination
  • Registry with ASCP, HEW, or AMT, preferred
  • CPR and basic first aid preferred
