Job Responsibilities

The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a skilled Traffic Signal Technician to become a vital part of our Traffic Engineering Maintenance team. The selected candidate will be responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of traffic signals while adhering to all safety protocols, policies, and operational guidelines. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting repairs and maintenance on traffic signal systems.
  • Performing routine inspections and preventative maintenance on electronic devices and associated equipment.
  • Diagnosing issues and executing repairs on electronic devices within designated program areas.
  • Being available for on-call duties and responding to urgent situations promptly.

Essential Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of traffic signal operations and maintenance.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and maintain accurate records.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Familiarity with management systems, including timing plans and graphic design.
  • Capability to respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Proficiency in using various hand tools and testing equipment for traffic signal maintenance.
  • Physical ability to conduct hands-on inspections in various conditions, including working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Knowledge of different traffic control devices and their functionalities.
  • Excellent customer service skills for interacting with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Effective communication skills for conveying technical information clearly.

Additional Considerations

  • Awareness of relevant federal, state, and local regulations and standards.
  • IMSA Roadway Lighting certification is preferred.
  • Commercial Driver's License is advantageous.
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Level I technician certification is a plus.
  • A background in electronics or a related field through education or experience is desirable.
