Job Title: Customer Service Representative

La Porte County Public Library is seeking a Customer Service Representative to join our team. As a key member of our staff, you will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service to our patrons.

Job Summary

The Customer Service Representative will be responsible for creating positive customer interactions and experiences on a daily basis. This will involve applying the Library's Customer Service Standards to ensure that all customers receive high-quality service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Apply the Library's Customer Service Standards to create positive customer interactions and experiences
  • Provide high-quality customer service, including answering customer questions and helping customers find library materials
  • Assist customers with the use of public computers, personal devices, and basic office equipment
  • Promote library classes, events, and services to customers
  • Handle materials, including checking materials in and out, emptying book returns, and processing requested items
  • Maintain customer accounts, including setting up new customer accounts, making changes to customer information, and reconciling customer accounts
  • Operate a point-of-sale system and handle cash transactions
  • Create a safe and clean environment for customers and staff
  • Apply the Code of Conduct policy consistently with all customers
Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and specialized training applicable to the position
  • Previous experience in customer service, preferably for one year
  • Comfort and confidence working in an environment with a variety of hardware devices and software products, and a willingness to learn new technologies
  • Cash handling experience using a cash drawer, register, and credit card machine
  • A positive, adaptable, and forward-thinking attitude
  • The ability to display appropriate demeanor at all times, including dress, body language, and facial expressions
  • The ability to organize materials alphabetically and numerically
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Office environment with occasional exposure to outside weather conditions
  • Mobility: Frequently lifts and carries 10 pounds; occasionally pushes/pulls up to 50 pounds using a cart; frequently sits, stands, kneels, squats, bends, twists, grasps, and reaches above shoulders to move materials
  • Vision abilities include: close, distance, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception
  • The ability to respond to fire alarms, warning sirens, and phone pages
