The Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board is tasked with overseeing a broad spectrum of activities that may endanger the quality of the region's surface and groundwater.

Our Redding office is characterized by a collaborative management team and skilled personnel dedicated to shaping practices and policies across the state.

We seek a proactive and seasoned professional to assume the role of Senior Environmental Scientist (Sr.

ES) (Supervisory), overseeing a team responsible for the regulatory management of complex timberland operations and wildfire-related initiatives within the Environmental Management Unit.

The selected candidate will collaborate closely with both internal and external stakeholders to merge geological, environmental, and watershed management knowledge, ensuring that timberland operations align with the objectives of safeguarding and enhancing water quality for present and future generations.

The incumbent will engage effectively with engineers, geologists, environmental scientists, managers, and legal experts from diverse backgrounds.

The incumbent will lead unit staff in the permitting and regulation of waste discharges resulting from forestland management activities on non-federal properties throughout the region.

They will also oversee staff in executing the aforementioned tasks to ensure comprehension of state and regional board permitting standards while pursuing compliance and enforcement actions against violators.


Collaboration with the Division Chief and Program Manager will be essential to implement board priorities, manage unit workload, and achieve annual program objectives.

The role requires developing and sustaining a proficient, capable, and knowledgeable technical team, necessitating skills in hiring, training, mentoring, coaching, and managing a diverse, multidisciplinary staff in a challenging program aimed at protecting and enhancing water quality across the Board's jurisdiction.


Additional responsibilities include managing complaint responses; addressing public information requests; preparing and presenting informational items, permitting, and enforcement actions before relevant boards; participating in committees; leading public meetings; and coordinating with other programs and agencies to effectively implement the Board's priorities.

Regular communication with internal program managers is expected, providing updates and feedback on annual program commitments. Support and collaboration with the Redding management team to achieve collective goals will also be a key aspect of this role.
