The Storage Safety and Engineering team within the Operational Safety and Compliance Programs group (PSS-2) is in search of a detail-oriented, proactive, and inventive engineer eager to expand their knowledge. The chosen candidate will contribute to PSS-2's objective of minimizing operational and programmatic risks associated with Weapons Production missions by applying innovative scientific and engineering methodologies to address challenges related to nuclear material storage and worker safety. The team is dedicated to ensuring the safety of personnel handling nuclear material storage containers at the facility.

R&D Engineer 2 ($101,700 - $168,200)
  • Utilize engineering expertise to tackle challenges associated with nuclear material storage containers.
  • Collaborate within a team to conduct surveillance and resolve container-related issues.
  • Apply engineering knowledge to assess existing solutions and suggest improvements.
  • Engage with individuals across various organizational levels.
  • Participate in the scientific community through professional societies and presentations at conferences.
  • Lead discussions with clients to ensure their requirements are met.
R&D Engineer 3 ($122,300 - $206,300)

In addition to the responsibilities outlined for the lower level, an R&D Engineer 3 will:
  • Work alongside other teams to explore phenomena and address issues pertinent to client needs.
  • Define tasks and objectives within established project timelines and ensure timely completion.
  • Actively engage in team-building activities, including proposal development and mentoring of students or postdoctoral researchers.
What You Need:

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Engineering Knowledge: Proven knowledge and experience in mechanical, nuclear, industrial, or chemical engineering.
  • Process Improvements: Demonstrated experience in designing, planning, and executing technical solutions to engineering challenges.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in business software such as MS Office, MS Visio, MS Teams, etc.
  • Teaming: Experience in developing and nurturing successful cross-organizational teams to address complex issues.
  • Communication and Customer Interaction: Strong oral and written communication skills with a background in customer service.
Education: A Bachelor's Degree in material science, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering discipline, along with a combined education/experience of over 4 years.

Additionally, for the R&D Engineer 3 level, the following is required:
  • Engineering Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge and experience in mechanical, nuclear, industrial, or chemical engineering principles.
  • Process Improvements: Extensive experience in designing, planning, and executing technical solutions to engineering challenges.
  • Technical Communication: Experience in delivering briefings to stakeholders and articulating designs/concepts to peers or management. Proficiency in drafting technical procedures with meticulous attention to detail.
Education: A Master's Degree in material science, mechanical engineering, or a related engineering discipline, along with a combined education/experience of over 6 years. A Ph.D. may be preferred at this level.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with industry standards, DOE/NNSA Complex codes, and criteria to ensure effective implementation of developed systems and workflows.
  • Technical Experience: Proven knowledge in Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA).
  • Technical Writing: Demonstrated excellence in technical writing through proposals, reports, journal publications, and conference proceedings.
  • Modeling Expertise: Experience with 3D computer-aided design software, such as Solidworks or Creo.
