Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) plays a crucial role in diagnosing and repairing military and civilian wheeled equipment, ranging from light to heavy vehicles. This position involves working closely with a team of skilled mechanics to troubleshoot issues, perform repairs, and maintain heavy machinery. Responsibilities include operating and inspecting equipment to identify defects, dismantling and reassembling machinery using hand tools and hoists, and assessing parts for wear and damage using precision instruments.

Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Conducts both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on wheeled vehicles and trailers.
  • Evaluates and tests wheeled equipment (both commercial and military) to assess serviceability and operational efficiency.
  • Services machinery with necessary fluids including fuel, oil, and hydraulic fluid, and disassembles malfunctioning components for repair.
  • Removes, repairs, cleans, and reassembles parts and accessories, ensuring proper functionality.
  • Handles hazardous materials and waste in compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Operates and inspects wheeled equipment for maintenance tasks.
  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace, adhering to safety protocols and property accountability.
  • Utilizes various repair and testing equipment, including welders and electrical testers.
  • Performs additional duties as required to meet operational goals.
  • Receives guidance from the Maintenance Supervisor and/or Maintenance Lead regarding policies and professional development.

EQUIPMENT & MATERIALS USED:

  • Extensive use of diagnostic tools, hand tools, power tools, and lifting devices.
  • Steel-toed footwear is mandatory.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in specific work areas, including face masks and hearing protection.
  • Occasional use of computer systems and multifunction devices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work primarily occurs in a shop setting, with potential outdoor tasks subject to varying weather conditions.
  • Job functions may require stooping, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
  • Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, and humidity.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs, and to bend, twist, and squat for extended periods.
  • Must be capable of lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in diverse environmental conditions, including confined spaces and at heights.
Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; one year of relevant experience may substitute for one year of education.
  • Valid State Driver's License is required.
  • Must provide personal tools that comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 level security clearance.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three to six years of experience in maintenance of wheeled equipment or a related field.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent exposure to inclement weather and varying environmental conditions.
  • Standard work week consists of 40 hours, with potential for additional hours as needed.
  • Must provide personal tools that meet OSHA standards.
