The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) plays a crucial role in diagnosing and repairing military and civilian wheeled vehicles, including light, medium, and heavy equipment. Collaborating with a team of skilled mechanics, the HEM troubleshoots issues, performs repairs, and maintains heavy machinery. Responsibilities include operating and inspecting equipment to identify defects, dismantling and reassembling machinery using various tools, and testing repaired equipment to ensure optimal performance.
Key ResponsibilitiesPRIMARY DUTIES:
- Conducts both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on wheeled vehicles and trailers.
- Inspects and tests wheeled equipment (commercial and military) to assess serviceability and functionality.
- Services machinery with necessary fluids, disassembles malfunctioning components, and performs repairs.
- Removes, cleans, and treats components for corrosion, then reassembles and reinstalls them.
- Ensures proper disposal of hazardous materials in compliance with environmental regulations.
- Operates and maintains wheeled equipment for service purposes.
- Maintains a clean and organized workspace, ensuring safety and accountability.
- Utilizes various repair and testing equipment, including welders and electrical testers.
- Completes additional tasks as assigned to meet operational goals.
- Receives guidance from the Maintenance Supervisor or Lead regarding policies and professional development.
Equipment Utilized:
- Extensive use of diagnostic tools, hand tools, power tools, and lifting devices.
- Steel toe footwear is mandatory.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in designated areas, including face masks and other protective gear.
- Occasional use of computer systems and multifunction devices.
Work Environment:
- Work primarily occurs in a shop setting, with potential outdoor tasks subject to varying weather conditions.
- Physical demands include stooping, climbing, and working in confined spaces.
- Frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, and humidity.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs, as well as bend and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must function effectively in adverse weather conditions.
EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION:
- High School Diploma or equivalent; relevant experience may substitute for education.
- Valid State Driver's License required.
- Must provide personal tools that comply with OSHA standards.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 level clearance.
EXPERIENCE:
- Three to six years of experience in maintenance of wheeled equipment or equivalent.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness to work additional hours as needed.
- Compliance with safety regulations and standards is essential.
