Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) plays a crucial role in diagnosing and repairing military and civilian wheeled vehicles, ranging from light to heavy equipment. This position involves collaboration with a team of skilled mechanics to troubleshoot issues, perform repairs, and maintain equipment to ensure optimal functionality.

Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Conducts both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on wheeled vehicles and trailers.
  • Inspects and tests equipment to assess serviceability and operational effectiveness.
  • Services machinery with necessary fluids and disassembles malfunctioning components for repair.
  • Removes, repairs, and reinstalls various parts and accessories while ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Handles hazardous materials responsibly, adhering to environmental regulations.
  • Operates and maintains equipment to ensure proper functioning.
  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace, practicing safety protocols at all times.
  • Utilizes a variety of repair tools and equipment, including welders and electrical testers.
  • Performs additional tasks as required to meet operational goals.
  • Receives guidance from supervisors regarding policies and professional development.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Utilizes a range of shop equipment, diagnostic tools, and hand tools.
  • Steel-toed footwear is mandatory.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in designated areas.
  • Occasional use of computer systems and multifunction devices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Primarily operates in a shop setting, with potential outdoor work under varying weather conditions.
  • Physical demands include climbing, prolonged standing, and working in confined spaces.
  • May encounter extreme temperatures and other challenging environmental conditions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to navigate ladders and stairs, and perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Must function effectively in adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications

EDUCATION & CERTIFICATION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; relevant experience may substitute for education.
  • Valid State Driver's License is required.
  • Must provide personal tools that comply with OSHA standards.
  • U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 level security clearance.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Three to six years of experience in the maintenance of wheeled equipment or a related field.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequent exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Standard work schedule is 40 hours per week.
  • Willingness to work additional hours as needed.
