About the Position:

Job Summary:

The City of Roanoke, Virginia is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician II to join the Street Sweeper crew in the Stormwater Division. This role involves operating a street sweeper and/or dump truck, handling both automatic and manual transmissions. The operator may also use equipment such as backhoes, heavy front-end loaders, and skid steers for leveling ground surfaces and performing street or construction repairs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate tractor trailer or other heavy construction equipment
  • Operate street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, backhoe, heavy front-end loader, crane and chipper, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces and street/construction repair
  • Service and make minor repairs and adjustments on equipment
  • Inspect equipment for proper safety and ensure that truck is equipped with all necessary equipment for the day's assignment
  • Maintain accurate log sheets, checklists and pre-trip sheets
  • Perform major and minor cleaning work on storm drain systems
  • Repair catch basin boxes with concrete and brick and/or blocks
  • Perform work in the resurfacing of concrete walkways (floor polishing) in city buildings
  • Perform some major and all minor motor repairs and replacement work such as: cleaning and replacing spark plugs, installing radiator hose, and packing water pumps; refacing valves and seats, grinding, assembling, and adjusting them; installing rings and bearings and making proper adjustments; and overhauling/repairing carburetors and clutches, brakes, ignition and fuel systems, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies, hydraulic system components including pumps and cylinders; and tuning motors
  • Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
  • Assist with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
  • May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity
  • May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
